Heat Pump Electrical Requirements: Wiring, Circuits & Panel Upgrades
What your electrician needs to do when you install a heat pump in Coquitlam, Vancouver, or the Lower Mainland.
Heat pumps are one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool your home in BC, but they have specific electrical needs. Getting the wiring and panel right from the start avoids callbacks, failed inspections, and performance issues. Here’s what homeowners in Coquitlam, Vancouver, Surrey, and the Lower Mainland should know about heat pump electrical requirements.
Heat Pumps Need a Dedicated Circuit
Heat pumps draw significant current when they start and while running. They must be on a dedicated circuit: no sharing with other outlets or appliances. The circuit size depends on the unit: smaller ductless mini-splits might need a 15A or 20A circuit; larger central or multi-zone systems often need 30A, 40A, or more. Your HVAC installer will specify the amperage, and a licensed electrician runs the correct wire and breaker from your panel to the disconnect (and from the disconnect to the outdoor unit if required by the manufacturer).
Panel Capacity and Service Upgrades
Older homes often have 100A service and may already be near capacity with an EV charger, dryer, range, and general loads. Adding a heat pump can push you over. A licensed electrician will check your panel’s capacity and load calculation. If there isn’t enough room, you may need a 200A panel upgrade or an electrical service upgrade before the heat pump can be connected. Doing this in the same project avoids delays and ensures everything is permitted and inspected together.
Permits and Inspections
New circuits and any panel work for a heat pump require a Technical Safety BC permit and inspection. Your electrician obtains the permit, installs the wiring and disconnect to code, and schedules the inspection. In the Lower Mainland, we coordinate this as part of the job so the HVAC installer can complete their side once the electrical is approved.
Coordinating With Your HVAC Installer
Timing matters: the electrical work (circuit, disconnect, and sometimes panel upgrade) usually happens before or in step with the heat pump installation. A licensed electrician in Coquitlam or the Tri-Cities can work with your HVAC contractor to ensure the disconnect location, wire size, and breaker size match the equipment. Fusion Point Electric provides heat pump electrical work across the Lower Mainland. We pull permits, run the dedicated circuit, and get the work inspected so your heat pump is ready to go.
