When and Why to Upgrade to a 200A Panel

Older homes, EVs, and heat pumps: when 200A service makes sense and how the upgrade works

Older homes often have 100A (or less) service. That was fine before EVs, heat pumps, and bigger loads. Today, adding an EV charger, heat pump, or major appliances can push you over, and upgrading to 200A gives you room to grow. In Coquitlam, Vancouver, Surrey, and the Lower Mainland, 200A panel upgrades are common. Here’s what’s involved and when it makes sense.

When You Need More Capacity

You may need a 200A upgrade if you’re adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, or other large load and your electrician’s load calculation shows you’re at or over capacity. Older 60A or 100A panels also have limited breaker space; upgrading gives you physical room for new circuits and headroom for future projects. If your breakers trip often or you’re told you can’t add a new circuit without an upgrade, that’s a strong signal.

What the Upgrade Involves

The upgrade involves replacing the electrical panel and usually the meter base (the enclosure where the utility connects). BC Hydro or your local utility must disconnect power before we work and reconnect after. We coordinate the shutdown, pull the Technical Safety BC permit, replace the panel and meter base, and arrange the inspection. The work is done to the Canadian Electrical Code and local requirements. It’s a one-time investment that supports your current and future electrical needs.

Timing and Permits

Panel upgrades typically take one to two days, plus time for the utility and inspection. We handle the permit and inspection so the work is signed off and documented. If you’re planning an EV charger or heat pump, doing the panel upgrade first (or as part of the same project) avoids delays and keeps everything compliant. Fusion Point Electric does 200A panel upgrades across the Lower Mainland. We coordinate with the utility and TSBC so you don’t have to.
