Smoke and CO Detector Requirements in BC: Placement & Installation

What the rules say about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, and when to hire a licensed electrician in the Lower Mainland.

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors save lives. In British Columbia, the BC Fire Code and local bylaws set out where they must be installed and how they should be powered. Whether you’re building, renovating, or bringing an older home up to standard, here’s what homeowners in Coquitlam, Vancouver, Surrey, and the Lower Mainland need to know, and when to call a licensed electrician for hardwired installation.

Where Are Smoke Alarms Required?

Smoke alarms are required on every storey of a dwelling, including the basement, and outside each sleeping area. In practice, that usually means at least one smoke alarm per floor and one in or near the hallway serving the bedrooms. New construction and major renovations typically require hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms so that when one sounds, all of them do. Battery-only units are often allowed in existing homes as long as they’re maintained and replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors: When and Where

Carbon monoxide detectors are required in homes that have fuel-burning appliances (furnace, fireplace, gas stove, etc.) or an attached garage. CO is produced when fuel doesn’t burn completely; it’s odourless and deadly. Detectors should be installed near sleeping areas and on each level where people sleep. Combination smoke-and-CO units are available and can simplify placement. Like smoke alarms, hardwired with battery backup is the gold standard for new work; battery-only may be acceptable in existing homes if they’re tested regularly.

Hardwired vs Battery-Only

Hardwired smoke and CO detectors are connected to your home’s electrical system and often include a battery backup. They’re more reliable than battery-only units and are required in new construction and in many renovation scenarios. Installing hardwired devices means running wiring from an existing circuit or adding a new circuit. That work must be done by a licensed electrician and permitted and inspected by Technical Safety BC. In Coquitlam, Vancouver, Surrey, and the Lower Mainland, a licensed electrician can install or replace hardwired smoke and CO detectors and ensure they’re interconnected where required.

Testing and Replacement

Smoke and CO detectors should be tested monthly and replaced according to the manufacturer’s date (often 7–10 years). If you’re upgrading to hardwired units, a licensed electrician can remove old devices, install new ones, and wire them so they meet current code. Fusion Point Electric offers smoke and CO detector installation across the Lower Mainland. We handle the wiring, permits, and inspections so your home is compliant and safer.
